Understanding Pip Values

What is a Pip?

A pip (Percentage in Point) is the smallest price move that a given exchange rate can make. For most currency pairs, a pip is the fourth decimal place (0.0001). For pairs involving the Japanese Yen, a pip is the second decimal place (0.01).

Why Pip Value Matters

Understanding pip value is crucial for:

  • Risk Management: Know exactly how much you're risking per pip movement
  • Position Sizing: Calculate appropriate trade sizes based on risk tolerance
  • Profit Targets: Set realistic profit expectations based on pip movements
  • Stop Loss Placement: Understand the monetary impact of your stop loss distance

Pip Value Formula

Pip Value = (One Pip / Exchange Rate) × Lot Size

Examples

Example 1: EUR/USD

Trading 1 standard lot (100,000 units) of EUR/USD at 1.0850:
Pip Value = (0.0001 / 1.0850) × 100,000 = $9.22 per pip

Example 2: USD/JPY

Trading 1 standard lot (100,000 units) of USD/JPY at 149.50:
Pip Value = (0.01 / 149.50) × 100,000 = $6.69 per pip
